Progress Made on Overhauling DC’s Most Hated Intersection

Construction of the New York Ave / Florida Ave Intersection Project Advances

For years, the intersection of New York Ave / Florida Ave in Northeast DC has been prone to congestion and danger for pedestrians. Commonly referred to as “Dave Thomas Circle” because Wendy’s was previously located in the middle of the intersection, residents were excited when the plans and funding to overhaul the intersection were announced in 2019.

Work on the project began last year, and the Fort Myer Construction crew is making substantial progress as they work to finish the project by this upcoming February. The Wendy’s has been demolished, and extensive underground utility work has been completed. Residents can see critical progress on concrete, roadway, and streetscape work.

The FMCC Electrical Division has been working hard to install new street light poles, arms, and luminaires, including conduits, utility holes, foundations, and connections to power feeds. With a new traffic pattern, an upgraded traffic signal system is required to ensure smooth traffic flow and pedestrian protection.

One of the team's biggest challenges is moving traffic while work is completed on the intersections. FMCC has implemented a phased approach to traffic Maintenance (MOT), ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow and nearby residents. Regular communication and coordination with local authorities and the community have been critical.

With improved traffic flows, safety, and new green space, this intersection will soon transform from one of the most hated in DC to one that residents will love. Fort Myer Construction is proud to play a leading role in this transformation.
