Progress being made on the GW Memorial Parkway Project

The Fort Myer Construction team is making important progress on the company’s largest to date. The George Washington Memorial Parkway is being rehabilitated between I-495 and Spout Run.

The project required extensive bridge work across 11 bridges. This summer, crews are working on extensive bridge substructure repairs and using scuba divers who will submerge 10 feet underwater to pump, concrete for bridge footers. The crews will continue to do overlay work on the bridges with ultra-high-performance concrete that is designed to attain strength up to 30,000 PSI, six times higher than traditional concrete.

Almost all of the drainage work has been completed on the project. This work is reducing erosion and sediment runoff. To protect the sensitive environment alongside the job site, crews are completing 24/7 erosion control monitoring. All environmental protection tools used on the job site are biodegradable and set up not to disturb wildlife. As a result of our work, even during extreme weather conditions, the parklands have been protected.

More than ten lane miles of the roadway will be completed by the end of July 2024, with extensive paving work happening now. Half of the historic stone wall work has been completed preserving the parkway's historic character. The team is on track to open half of the roadway permanently to the public by the end of the year.

As part of FMCC’s contractual scope of work, electric and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) infrastructure is under construction for future use by the National Park Service (NPS). The electrical and utility work will also allow NPS to collect data to help planners understand the growing needs of the roadway. The infrastructure can also evolve to track driving behavior to improve innovative driving features and parkway safety in future years.

One of the most complex aspects of the project has been the maintenance of traffic needs. Our team has successfully kept the flow of traffic moving throughout the construction process and protected crews while they work.
