New York Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Named “Best Transportation Special Solution”

Fort Myer’s New York Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation project is a 2014 award-winner recognized by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Awards Competition. The project earned “Best Transportation Special Solution Bridge.”  The PCI Design Awards recognize design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. The program demonstrates how designers are continuing to use precast/prestressed concrete components to achieve sustainable, more cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing, and quickly constructed projects. The 2014 awards program also took the structures’ high performance attributes into consideration.

“It was a tough competition,”said Don Powell Jr., principal-in-charge at BOKA Powell architecture firm and one of the building awards judges. “We saw many innovative applications of this technology that resulted in low-cost, high-quality finishes, and exceptional quality control.”

“For 52 years, the PCI Design Awards Program has celebrated projects that push the envelope in designing with precast concrete,” said PCI President James G. Toscas, PE. “This year’s winning projects exemplify the fusion of high performance precast concrete with outstanding functional and aesthetic design.”
