FMCC Contributes to Award-Winning Work on West End Square 50

FMCC had the opportunity to handle all replacement of site utilities, new hardscape improvements, and roadway asphalt upgrades on a project recognized by ENR with the Office/Retail/Mixed-Use Award of Merit.

Eastbanc was selected by the DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development to develop West End Square 50, which is be owned by the City.

Square 50 is a mixed use building that includes the West End fire station, a commercial space for competitive squash tournaments, and 61 affordable dwelling units.

The West End fire station is proudly pronounced as the base of the building on M Street with a perforated corrugated metal-clad red box of the Apparatus Bay. The use of materials of metal, glass and masonry convey the agility of the 21st century DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department to be effective in its ultimate purpose; “prompt response for the protection of life and property.”

Above the fire station is a rectangular volume encompassing a two-story Squash Club that recedes on M street and cantilevers on 23rd street. By pulling back the mass of the squash club on M Street, a public terrace was created to provide a framed view of M street and enlivening the existing street activity. The project incorporates multiple sustainable design features and received LEED -Silver certification.

This project won several awards for design and innovation from Associated Builders and Contractors, NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association, and Engineering News-Record MidAtlantic Region.
