COLUMBIA PIKE MULTIMODAL STREET IMPROVEMENTS

Overview

  • Location: Route 244 from Four Mile Run Bridge to S. Jefferson Street, Arlington, VA

  • Client: Arlington County, VA

Project Description

The goal of this project was to make Columbia Pike a safer, more accessible route for all users. Arlington transformed this main road into a complete street that balances all modes of travel and supports high-quality, high-frequency transit service. In addition to visible improvements to the road, there was extensive work below the roadway to replace aging and leak-prone water and sewer pipes and to bury existing overhead utilities underground.

Fort Myer’s responsibilities included placing all utilities underground and installing dry utility duct banks for Dominion Energy, Verizon, and COMCAST. Roadway improvements included sidewalks, curb & gutter, ADA ramps, street lights, the replacing and/or modifying of existing traffic signals, and landscaping.

Project Significance

A signal light was placed at the intersection of South Frederick Street and Columbia Pike. This is a project improvement that was petitioned by many residents in the area due to 33 collisions that have occurred at this intersection within the past several years.
