CLARENDON METRO PLAZA

Overview

  • Location: Arlington, VA

  • Client: Arlington County and WMATA

Project Description

This project included improvements of the public park at the Clarendon Metro Station between Wilson and Clarendon Boulevards. Fort Myer helped create a multi-use plaza to accommodate the farmers’ markets, music events, vendors, and other community activities, while enhancing pedestrian access to Metrorail and transit. Improvements included:

•    New pedestrian paving

•    New curb extension on Clarendon Boulevard

•    New seating walls and movable tables and chairs

•    New street and plaza lighting

•    New landscaping and irrigation

•    Covered bike parking

Project Significance

This project demonstrates Fort Myer Construction’s ability to develop new urban parks and recreation facilities in high-profile urban residential/commercial areas in an integrated fashion. Additionally, special attention was required during the excavation period to protect the existing rare strain of buckeye trees. An expert arborist was on site to protect root matter and meticulously excavate. Additionally, this was the debut appearance of a new design implemented for handrails, which will now become standard for all other Arlington County Parks.
